Dental crowns are known for their restorative properties, but they can also have amazing aesthetic benefits. We use crowns for a wide range of purposes, from repairing broken teeth to restoring a tooth following root canal treatment and we offer high quality, durable and beautiful looking crowns for the best results.
What is a crown?
A dental crown is a type of restoration; restorative treatments are used to patch up and strengthen the teeth following an injury or when a tooth has been damaged by infection or decay. Crowns are also known as caps because they sit over the top of the tooth.
There are several different materials, which can be used to make dental crowns. We usually find that ceramics are most popular because they match the shade of the natural tooth for a seamless finish and they have a glossy sheen. Crowns can also be made from precious metals, such as gold, which are very durable and a mixture of metal and ceramic.
What happens when you have a crown?
Before you have a crown, your tooth will be prepared to get rid of any damaged or decayed tooth tissue; the tooth is then shaped ready for the crown. We offer same-day Cerec crowns or hand-crafted crowns, which are made by skilled dental technicians. If Cerec is used, we take photographs of your tooth, which Cerec technology then converts into 3D images; these images are sent to the milling machine and the new crown is fabricated. Your dentist will then fit your new crown. The Cerec process is very quick and can be completed in a single session.
If you are having a hand-crafted crown, we will make an impression of your tooth using dental putty and this will be sent to the laboratory. The process usually takes around 2 weeks and once your crown has been made, it will be sent back to us and we will fit it. Once the crown is in place over the tooth, it is secured firmly using dental adhesive.
Benefits of dental crowns
Crowns have many benefits; they repair and restore the teeth, protect them from further injury and make them look more attractive. With added strength, the tooth is able to function more effectively and this means you can eat properly without worrying about pain or weakness in your tooth.
