Common dental injuries
Dental injuries can affect the teeth, gums or the bone structures in the mouth. Sometimes they are mild and don’t require any treatment, but often they can be very painful and urgent treatment is needed.
The most common types of dental injury or issues that require immediate attention include:
- chipped and broken teeth
- dislodged teeth (avulsion)
- severe dental pain
- jaw fractures
- dental abscesses
Often, there are things you can do to reduce pain and discomfort before you see a dentist. In cases of tooth pain, it is advisable to take over the counter painkillers, but take care to follow the dosage instructions and ask a pharmacist for advice if you are already taking medication. Avoid eating hard or chewy foods and apply an ice pack to ease swelling and pain (always ensure that the ice pack is wrapped in a towel or cloth to prevent damage to the skin or gum surface).
If you have lost a tooth, it could be possible to save it if you can act quickly, and see a dentist within 30 minutes. Call us as soon as the incident happens and then try to make sure the tooth stays moist by placing it in milk or holding it carefully by the inside of your cheek and your gums (this is not suitable advice for children). If you’re able to get to us quickly, our dentists might be able to re-implant the tooth. It’s important to avoid touching the tooth root. If you need to touch the tooth, hold it by the crown section.
When you see your Aqua Dental Spa dentist, they will examine your mouth to find the cause of your dental pain and they will then discuss treatment options with you.
