If you have a cavity in your tooth, you will probably be advised to have a filling. In the past, the only option was a silver amalgam filling, but we now offer amazing white fillings, which make your tooth stronger without detracting from your beautiful smile.
What are white fillings?
White fillings are so-called because they are white in colour and match the natural shade of your teeth. Unlike amalgam fillings, white fillings are not visible when you smile and the only person who will be able to notice the filling will be your dentist.
White fillings are made from dental composite and resins. Composite comes in different shades so your dentist will select the shade closest to your tooth for the best aesthetics.
How is a white filling placed?
When you have a filling, your dentist will prepare your tooth before filling the cavity. This involves cleaning your tooth thoroughly, removing all the decayed tissue and applying bonding agent to the tooth structure. The composite is then placed inside the cavity and shaped to ensure that it fills the entire hole; at this stage, the composite is still soft and this means that it can be moulded very easily. Once the cavity has been filled, your dentist will set the composite with a curing light, which will make the filling hard and durable.
Benefits of white fillings
The major benefit of white fillings is the fact that they are invisible and do not have a negative impact on the look of your smile. However, there are other advantages. Dental composite is considered a safer and more environmentally friendly material than mercury. Amalgam fillings are stronger and more durable than white fillings, but advances in material science mean that white fillings should now last for up to 10 years and are suitable for most cavities.
