What’s so good about dental implants?
Dental implants are small titanium appliances, and are placed inside openings within the jawbone to replace tooth roots when a tooth is lost through injury, trauma or disease. As titanium is a biocompatible metal, this means that implants are able to integrate into the bone tissue, which provides optimum support for the new tooth.
One of the best aspects of dental implant treatment is versatility. This treatment is open to most people, as implants can be attached to crowns, dental bridges and dentures. This range of restorations means that implants are suitable for patients with any number of missing teeth.
In addition to producing natural aesthetics and offering versatility, implants also provide convenience and longevity. There are no special steps to take to look after the implants and they are designed to last for many years.
What happens when you have dental implants?
Before dental implants are placed, you will have tests and scans to determine the best site for the implant and a small hole will be drilled in the bone tissue. The implant is then placed in the socket and left to integrate. The implant procedure is usually performed under local anaesthetic or sedation and a small incision is made in the gum to create a flap, which is lifted to expose the bone. Once the implant is in place, the gum flap is closed and the incision is sutured.
The osseointegration phase (when the implant integrates into the tissue) takes between three and eight months and once this is complete, the permanent restoration can be attached to the head of the implant. You can then start enjoying the countless benefits of your new smile.
