What are fillings?

Fillings are a type of restorative treatment used to fill cavities (small holes that develop in the surface of the tooth). Cavities are a sign of decay. They are caused by bacteria and the acids they release. These acids erode the enamel, causing the tooth to become vulnerable to attack.

Filling a cavity closes off routes into the tooth for bacteria reducing the risk of infection spreading through the tooth. It also helps to make the tooth stronger and improves the function of the tooth.

White fillings are made from dental composite and resins. They are designed to restore the tooth without any negative impact on the aesthetic of the smile. Unlike metal fillings, white fillings are undetectable when you smile. We match the shade of composite to your tooth to create the most discreet finish.

Is it painful to have a filling?

The procedure to fill a tooth is carried out under local anaesthetic so you won’t feel any discomfort at all. Once your tooth is numb, your dentist will start to clear the cavity, removing any decayed tissue. When the tooth is completely clean, the cavity will be etched and bonding agent will be applied to the surface to help the composite to adhere. The composite is then inserted and moulded to fit the shape of the cavity. It is then set, which involves shining a curing light onto the tooth. This only takes a few seconds and you won’t feel anything. Once your dentist has completed any final adjustments to the filling, you’ll be free to go. After treatment, your mouth will feel a little numb, but you won’t feel any discomfort and you’ll be able to use your tooth as normal.
