About gum disease

Gum disease is a very common oral health condition, which affects most adults to some degree at some point in their lifetime. Gum disease is caused by harmful bacteria teamed up with traces of leftover food and saliva which together form a sticky substance called plaque. Plaque clings to the gum line and the tooth surfaces and when you eat, the bacteria release acids that irritate the gums. Most cases of gum disease are linked to poor oral hygiene, but there are other risk factors, including smoking.

There are two main forms of gum disease: a mild type known as gingivitis, which occurs when the gums become inflamed and painful, and an advanced form called periodontal disease, which causes irreversible damage to the gums and the bone structure beneath.

Treating gum disease

It is possible to treat gingivitis with cleaning treatments and good oral hygiene at home. However, periodontal disease is much trickier to manage. We use a combination of techniques to treat periodontal disease including frequent oral hygiene sessions and treatments such as root planing and scale and polish. Our aim is to prevent the condition from getting any worse and to ensure that you are as comfortable as possible.

Preventing gum disease

Gum disease is preventable and good oral hygiene, regular dental appointments and a healthy diet can all help to keep harmful bacteria at bay. We are able to offer advice about oral hygiene at home and we can also provide help with quitting smoking. Ask our friendly team for more details. It’s also really important to be aware of the early warning signs, including inflammation, tenderness and bleeding from the gums. If you notice these symptoms, call and arrange an appointment.
