About gum disease

Gum disease is a common oral disease that occurs when the gums become irritated, swollen and painful. Gum disease is caused by acids released by harmful bacteria. These acids also erode the enamel, contributing to decay. The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene, but smoking and consuming sugary foods and drinks can also increase the chances of developing symptoms of gum disease.

Gum disease develops quite quickly and it’s beneficial to be aware of the symptoms so you can recognise them and seek help. The main symptoms include bleeding when you brush, inflammation, tenderness, redness and pain.

When should I see a dentist?

It’s best to arrange to see your dentist as soon as you spot potential symptoms of gum disease. Even if it turns out to be nothing to worry about, it’s always best to be on the safe side. If you do have early signs, these can be addressed before gum disease becomes more advanced. If symptoms of mild gum disease (gingivitis) are left untreated, the disease becomes more aggressive and periodontal disease (advanced gum disease) causes irreversible damage to the bone tissue beneath the teeth and gums, eventually resulting in the teeth coming loose and falling out.

Preventing gum disease

The good news about gum disease is that it’s largely preventable. By adopting good oral hygiene and healthy eating habits and keeping up to date with routine check-ups you can dramatically reduce your risk of developing gum disease. We also recommend regular dental hygiene sessions, especially if you have a higher risk of gum disease or you have had infections in the past.
