Gum disease affects thousands of people in the UK, but it is preventable. We offer preventative dental care, advice and information about preventing gum disease, oral hygiene treatment and general dental treatment to reduce the risk of gum disease and we also offer provide a comprehensive service to cater for patients who already have existing signs of gum disease.
Signs of gum disease
One of the best ways of fighting back against gum disease is to be aware of the symptoms. Gum disease is a progressive condition and tackling it early will help to prevent it from getting worse and causing permanent damage. The symptoms to look out for include swollen and sore gums, bleeding when you brush and tenderness and pain in the gums. If you think you may have gum disease, arrange to see your dentist as quickly as possible, so that treatment can be administered at the earliest possible stage.
Fighting gum disease in West London
The most effective way to prevent gum disease is to practice good oral hygiene at home and keep an eye on your diet. Brushing and flossing helps to remove harmful bacteria from the mouth and prevent plaque formation. Diet is also really important because eating certain foods increases the risk of enamel wear and gum disease; these foods include sweets, biscuits, cakes, fruit juices, fizzy pop, energy drinks, wine and acidic salad dressings.
We also highly recommend regular dental checks, ideally every 6 months and we advise patients who have a high risk of developing gum disease to see our amazing dental hygienist on a regular basis.
Treating gum disease
Treating mild gum disease is usually fairly straightforward and we use hygiene treatments to clear bacteria and plaque from the mouth. Treatment for advanced gum disease (periodontal disease) is more complex and requires careful management; we usually recommend intensive oral hygiene treatments, such as scale and polish, and root planing.
