Confused about cosmetic dentistry options?

Jun 10th, 2019 Gummy smiles corrected by Hatch End dentist Get in touch

Do you feel like covering your mouth to stop others from seeing your gummy smile? Here’s something to cheer you up. The problem can now be solved with a visit to the dentist.

Even better – the process can be carried out in just a few minutes and it’s completely painless!

The procedure is called gum re-contouring or gum shaping and is available at most dentists, including here at Aqua Dental in Hatch End. It involves completely re-shaping the gumline to a more aesthetically pleasing and symmetrical shape. The process can also lift gum lines to get rid of that ‘gummy’ smiles that make people want to cover up.

What’s a Gummy Smile?

Generally, gum margins are around 3 mm from the bones and the gum lines should be symmetrical. Lateral incisors should have a lower gum line than their neighbours, with a margin of around 1 mm.

When the gum line is too high, the gums can show through smiles in the same way teeth should – causing that familiar gummy smile effect.

Gummy Smile Treatment

During this procedure, a small amount of gum tissue is removed to expose the teeth to make them appear a little longer.

Before the procedure, your dentist may apply a gel or use a local anaesthetic to numb your gums. Then using a beam of light, your gum is sculptured by removing a small amount of gum tissue. In some cases, the bone must also be reduced to prevent the gumline regrowing to its original position.

There’s no bleeding and no need for stitches. Afterwards, there may be a slight inflammation of the gum tissue lasting a few days, but this can easily be relieved by over-the-counter medication.

The procedure takes around 15-20 minutes and is completely pain-free – so it’s an instant solution to a cosmetic condition which can really dent confidence. It’s also useful for patients with unhealthy gums and gingivitis – or gum disease.
