At Aqua Dental we are committed to promoting good health and we do our best to champion the notion that prevention is better than cure. Sometimes, it’s impossible to prevent disease, but we do everything we can to provide the best treatment and early diagnosis. In the case of oral cancer, screening is extremely important because it enables us to spot very early warning signs. We offer screening for all our patients and we are also here to discuss oral cancer, its causes and symptoms, with our patients.
Oral cancer screening
Screening is a really important weapon in the fight against oral cancer. With screening, we use the latest technology to identify very early changes in the mouth, which may be indicative of the early stages of cancer. We can detect abnormalities, which are not visible to the naked eye and this means that we can set the ball rolling in terms of treatment at the earliest possible stage. With cancer, every day counts and early diagnosis can make a significant difference to the chances of survival.
Screening is quick and painless and there is nothing to worry about.
The causes of oral cancer
Sometimes, it’s impossible to know why cancerous cells develop, but the main risk factors for oral cancer are drinking excessively or over a prolonged period of time and smoking. Smokers who also drink are up to 30 times more likely to develop mouth cancer than non-smokers who rarely drink alcohol. Exposure to the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is also linked to cervical cancer, also increases the risk of mouth cancer.
The warning signs
Common symptoms of mouth cancer include swelling and abnormal lumps, slow-healing mouth ulcers and red and white patches in the throat or mouth. Often, these signs turn out to be nothing, but we always recommend getting checked out, as early diagnosis can make all the difference.
