What exactly is a crown?

A crown is a type of dental restoration, which is designed to strengthen the tooth following an injury or an infection. Crowns are sometimes known as caps because they are placed over the top of the natural tooth structure. If your tooth is weak, broken, chipped or decayed, fitting a crown can help to prevent further damage, and enhance the aesthetic of your smile. Crowns can be made from precious metals, but many people opt for ceramic crowns, as they create a much more natural look.

How is a crown fitted?

At Aqua Dental, we offer our patients a choice. We are able to offer same-day treatment using innovative CEREC technology, but we can also provide traditional laboratory-made crowns. This process usually takes around 2 weeks. With CEREC, we take a photograph of the mouth, and this is converted into a 3D model, which is subsequently turned into a brand new, bespoke crown. The process takes minutes, and the new crown can be fitted on the same day, meaning that there is no need for temporary restorations.

Before you have a crown fitted, your tooth will be shaped and prepared. Once this has been done, and the new crown is ready, it will be placed and secured. Every crown is custom-made to ensure that it fits perfectly.

Caring for a crown

When you have a crown, it’s really important to look after it in the same way as your natural teeth. It’s not possible for the actual crown to decay, but the tooth tissue that joins the crown can become decayed and infected, so good oral hygiene is essential. Brush twice a day, floss daily, and book check-ups every 6-9 months. If you have crowns, bridges or fillings, your dentist will have a look at them every time you have a routine appointment. If you have any issues between appointments, don’t hesitate to get in touch.
