Many people dread going to the dentist, but check-ups are nothing to worry about and they will save you pain and money in the long-run. We recommend 6-9 monthly check-ups for all our patients, young and old, as a means of promoting good oral health and keeping dental disease at bay.
What happens during a check-up?
Check-ups only last 5-10 minutes and there is absolutely no pain involved. When you have a check-up, your dentist completes a check-list to look out for any potential issues such as cavities or swollen gums, identify any changes in the mouth, check for signs of oral cancer and determine your general level of oral health. Your dentist will check your teeth, tongue, gums and the insides of your cheeks and they will ask you if you’ve had any problems or pain since your last check-up. If there are any issues in need of attention, your dentist will discuss these with you and we will arrange a follow-up appointment at a time that is convenient for you.
During your check-up, your dentist will also give your teeth a quick polish and you are very welcome to ask any questions.
Any observations from your check-up will be recorded in your patient notes.
The benefits of regular check-ups
Regular check-ups help to reduce the risk of dental disease, prevent you from experiencing pain, swelling and soreness and save you money. Dental problems tend to get worse with time, so frequent check-ups enable us to treat issues at an early stage. Leaving them often increases dental discomfort and the cost of treatment.
We understand that many patients are nervous about going to the dentist and we have experience in providing care for anxious patients. Please don’t hesitate to call us and mention that you are a nervous patient. We can work with you to build your confidence and make you feel more comfortable so that you feel able to attend regular check-ups.
