What causes snoring?
Snoring noises are caused by soft tissue vibrating at the back of the mouth. The most common risk factors for snoring include:
- being overweight
- allergies
- drinking alcohol
- sleeping on your back
- smoking
- taking sedative medication
Often, snoring occurs temporarily when you lie on your back rather than your side. It can also occur when you’re suffering with an illness that affects your breathing, such as a cough or cold, or if you have been drinking alcohol during the evening. However, snoring can be a more permanent fixture and if this is the case, you should seek help.
How to banish snoring
There are various things you can do to reduce the risk of snoring. Often, implementing simple changes such as steering clear of sedatives, sleeping on your side and avoiding alcohol in the evenings can make a massive difference. Losing weight, exercising and giving up smoking can also be hugely beneficial.
If lifestyle changes are not sufficient to bring about improvements, we may recommend using an appliance called a mandibular advancement device, which pushes the lower jaw forward slightly. This helps to increase air flow. These devices are custom-made and are designed for comfort, so wearing one won’t stop you from sleeping.
