As the seasons change, we tend to adjust our diets accordingly. Gone are the days of eating ice cream and barbecued meat in the sunshine. Now, autumn is upon us, and it’s time to embrace heartier dishes that will warm the cockles on a chilly, grey day. If you’re keen to boost your dental health and enjoy some seasonal fare, here are some top tooth-friendly options for September:
Soup: soup is a great option for autumnal days, as it’s healthy, filling and easy to eat. You can choose from a huge range of flavours and it only takes a couple of minutes to heat up a pan if you’ve had a hard day at work and you can’t face cooking.
Porridge: porridge is an autumn/winter staple and it’s a much healthier option than cereals like chocolate and sugar-coated rings, flakes or shells. Porridge releases energy slowly, so you won’t be reaching for snacks mid-morning, and it’s also high in fibre. If you have a sweet tooth, add berries or a spoonful of honey rather than sprinkling sugar on the top.
Yoghurt: if you’re looking for a tooth-friendly, weather-appropriate dessert now that it’s too chilly for ice lollies and 99’s, yoghurt is an excellent choice. Try and avoid sweetened yoghurts and opt for natural yoghurt with fruit or honey.
Potatoes: mashed and baked potatoes are staples for cold days, and they go with everything from meat and fish to vegetables.
Fish: oily fish is packed full of essential fats and nutrients, as well as protein. Some studies have suggested that omega oils found in fish like salmon can help to reduce the risk of gum disease.
