841473_blogThe words root and canal in the same sentence are enough to make most people feel slightly anxious, but the reality is that root canal therapy is nothing to fear. This procedure has a bad reputation, but it’s actually a very effective treatment for dental infection and a means of saving a tooth that would otherwise be extracted. We use local anaesthetic to prevent any pain, so you won’t feel anything and your tooth will be much stronger and healthier afterwards.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that is called upon when a dental infection has reached the pulp chamber. This is the living part of the tooth, which contains the nerves and blood vessels. If the pulp tissue becomes decayed or damaged, the tooth starts to die and there is a high risk of infection spreading and abscesses developing. Root canal treatment is used to stop the spread of infection and clear away decayed tissue. In many cases, root canal therapy is an alternative to tooth extraction.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel any pain and our experienced, caring team will do all they can to ensure that you feel comfortable throughout the procedure. When the anaesthetic has taken effect, your dentist will drill into the tooth to gain access to the root canals and then clear away the decayed pulp tissue. Once the root canals are clear, they are cleaned thoroughly and then sealed using gutta percha, a dental material.

After root canal treatment, it’s advisable to place a new crown to strengthen the tooth.
